...we have a very different culture than we did 100 years ago--how are folks living 2000 years ago going to have any concept of how we, 21st-Centurians, should live our lives?
I always fall back on the Golden Rule. It works 90% of the time. The only time it doesn't work is when someone is willing to put themselves through much more effort or suffering than most other people are willing to put themselves through. But for the most part, if you can put yourself in other people's shoes, you should be able to treat other people pretty fairly.
I actually have my own version of the Golden Rule. It's called the Orange Rule and it goes like this: do unto others as you would have them do unto your pals.
So, if you are going to do something to someone that you would never do to a friend, DON'T DO IT.
Would you steal from a friend? Would you sleep with your friend's spouse? Kill a friend?
So, I think that works a little better.
